B&Q has been one of Shelter’s partners since 2017, raising almost £3m for our cause. As a standout charity partner, they wanted us to highlight their shared objective on the importance of home with a big idea that grabs attention during the festive season.
The installation idea needed to align with Shelter’s winter proposition, raising awareness of children stuck in temporary accommodation. Through this idea, we aimed to highlight how Shelter and B&Q are working together to help end the housing emergency.

5,040 CHILDREN ARE MADE HOMELESS IN ENGLAND EVERY MONTH.

To highlight this issue, we propose creating a statue of a child made entirely of 5,040 fairy lights. Each light will represent a child living in temporary accommodation. This statue will serve as a poignant reminder of all the children spending Christmas in harsh and unfair temporary housing conditions. Placing the sculpture in a riverside location, such as the South Bank, could make its impact even more significant.

172 FAMILIES ARE SERVED A NO-FAULT
EVICTION NOTICE EVERY DAY.

To emphasize this, we proposed using a classic Christmas icon – a snow globe. However, the scene inside the globe will not be idyllic; instead, it will depict a family being evicted on a cold, snowy day. The oversized snow globe could be positioned at Victoria Station, accompanied by a plaque carrying a message to raise awareness.
